Albert Rought-Rought was a successful businessman who made his living as a furrier in the small town of Brandon, deep in rural East Anglia. He was a keen cricketer who regularly turned out for the town’s eleven in the years before the Great War. Alas, his enthusiasm was not matched by any significant ability with either bat or ball. But he was determined that his three sons – Basil, Rodney, and Desmond – would shine where he had failed. He arranged for them to be coached by ex-Test fast bowler Bill Hitch, founded a club in which their talents could be nurtured, and oversaw their development into a trio of highly capable cricketers. Two went on to win Blues at Cambridge University and all three represented Norfolk to great effect in the Minor Counties Championship between the Wars. This is the story of how Albert’s dream for his sons came true.
