The 17th Australians arrived at the Fry’s Ground, Bristol, undefeated outside of the Test matches; they had regained the Ashes with a 2-1 series triumph. Since 1878 Australian tourists had played over 600 games in the UK and none of them had resulted in a tie. History was to be re-written after three dramatic days in August 1930 when Gloucestershire became the county that came the nearest to defeating the 1930 Australians. In the event the match ended in a dramatic tie, both sides scoring 274 runs. It was a bowler’s match as Parker and Goddard were the champions for the home side while Grimmett and Hornibrook did the damage for the tourists. ‘An Historic Tie’ tells the story of those three drama filled days and of the extensive press coverage the game generated.
