During the Ashes cricket tour of 1901-02, the England captain Archie MacLaren was so impressed by the bowling of Alex Kermode in the nets at the Sydney Cricket Ground that he invited him over to England to try his luck with his own county, Lancashire. Following a two-year qualification period, Kermode would take over 300 wickets in first-class cricket for Lancashire and would later enjoy a successful career as club professional with Bacup CC in the Lancashire League.
