Under the banner of their “Pinnace” navy cut cigarettes, the Godfrey Phillips tobacco company began issuing real photograph cigarette cards of association footballers in 1920. Over approximately four years there were over 4,000 cards issued and they included 18 players who appeared for Blackpool Football Club between 1920 and 1923, plus a team group of the 1920/21 side (illustrated). Those players form an integral part of the history of the club and, 100 years on, it is fitting for them and their exploits to be remembered. This well-illustrated book on the “Pinnace” boys has extensive pen portraits of each of the 18 players, together with a comprehensive account of the three roller-coaster seasons, 1920/21 to 1922/23, during which the cards were issued.
