Leslie Poidevin’s life was frustratingly full of near misses. He would have been - but for injury - a Test cricketer and he would have been - but for an administrative bungle - an Olympian. But his achievements were substantial enough - he appeared in Davis Cup tennis and a Wimbledon semi-final, won the Sheffield Shield with New South Wales and the County Championship with Lancashire, besides qualifying as a doctor and becoming an influential journalist. ‘First and Foremost a Cricketer’ tells the story of a full, yet strangely restless, life.
