Stan Mortensen signed for Blackpool in 1938 as a promising, but little known outside his native north-east, 17-year-old forward. Despite World War II and his RAF service disrupting his progress, he began to blossom into a fine goalscorer. And by the time the war was over he had sealed his reputation as a goalscorer par excellence with a host of goals for Blackpool and a variety of other clubs around the country. The return of official league football brought him to the fore and for eight seasons from 1946/47 he was Blackpool’s leading goalscorer. In addition his performances earned him 25 international appearances in which he scored an impressive 23 goals. By the time he left Blackpool he had scored 226 goals in 349 games and his reputation as a legend in the annals of Blackpool Football Club was secure. On this, the centenary of his birth, the full story of a stellar football career is told.
