Billy Makin, born in Bolton, Lancashire, lived most of his life in Sydney where he experienced triumph and failure. He was a brilliant student, a long-serving public servant, and an accomplished cricketer. His sudden rise, during which he played cricket twice for New South Wales, was followed by a dramatic loss in form and a troubled marriage. Makin’s long life was filled with “puzzles aplenty” which the authors have attempted to solve or explain.
