Mainly Cricket... A selection of baseball & cricket books (September 2021) The first antiquarian and second-hand book catalogue I have issued in printed form for many a long year. The catalogue includes both baseball and cricket books, mainly the latter, including item 53, an uncommon American publication which relates to both sports - a manual on cricket written by an Englishman who is often referred to as the “Father of Baseball’, namely Exeter-born Henry Chadwick. The inclusion of over 60 baseball books reflects the fact that over the past few years I have become more and more enamoured with the sport: item 264 details my 2019 limited edition booklet ‘Harry’s Mission. The American Baseball Players tour of the British Isles, 1874’, which recalls a long forgotten tour of the British Isles in 1874 by Boston Red Stockings and Philadelphia Athletics baseball players.
Aside from the 300-plus books listed, 113 of which are signed, the catalogue also includes a large, original photograph of a Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club XI pictured in 1905 on the occasion of JA Dixon’s final match for the county, and several Edwardian cricket postcards.
The final item, number 318, is a most uncommon cabinet card of the Lancashire and England batsman Albert Ward. The photograph was taken when he was professional at Darwen Cricket Club c1886 and was used in a recent limited edition publication of mine, ‘Life Story of Albert Ward: His Recollections of Great Players’. Number one in my ‘Interviews with famous Lancashire cricketers’ series, this short-run limited edition booklet proved so popular that it sold out within 48 hours!
