The third in a series of cricketing monographs that concentrate on significant cricket matches played in the author’s hometown of Bolton during the 19th-century, this publication recalls an infamous encounter between two of Lancashire’s premier cricket clubs in Victorian times. One in which a combination of awful weather, partisan umpiring, unruly behaviour, and unseemly bad language from a section of the home crowd, not to mention allegations of betting, contributed to a most unsavoury spectacle.
